Dhaka, May 17: Stray incidents of violence marred the countrywide dawn-to-dusk hartal called by the BNP-led 18 party alliance on Thursday. During the hartal, police arrested the BNP education secretary, Khairul Kabir Khokon, near the party’s headquarters at Naya Paltan. He was taken to the Detective Branch office and later produced before the metropolitan magistrate's court.

DHAKA, May 17: Leaders and workers of Awami League and its associate bodies paid rich tributes to the father of the nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman by placing wreaths at his portrait on the premises of Bangabandhu Memorial Museum at Dhanmondi in the city today in observance of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina's 31st Homecoming Day.
