Tribute to Natyaguru Nurul Momen

November 25 marks the 102nd birth anniversary of theatre personality Natyaguru Nurul Momen (1908-1990). On the occasion, Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy and Aurony Mohona International Foundation (AMIF) of Dhaka, have jointly organised weeklong commemorative programmes, starting from November 22 at the National Theatre Hall of the Shilpakala Academy, featuring discussions on Momen’s life and works, documentaries, his play ‘Nemesis’ and a photography exhibition.
National professor Kabir Chowdhury, BSA director general Kamal Lohani, novelist Razia Mahbub, Professor Abdullah Abu Sayeed, cultural personality Atiqul Haque Chowdhury, Sayed Hasan Imam and AMIF president Dr. Mahmud N Momen will speak about this pioneer satirist. Critics from home and abroad, including Malcolm Muggeridge, Mohitlal Mojumdar, Sajani Kanto Das and Ashutosh Bhattacharya, have hailed Nurul Momen as the “father of modern Bangla drama.” His acclaimed single-character play “Nemesis” is considered to be world-class.
Nurul Momen's contribution to popularising satire in Bangladeshi theatre is incomparable. He was born into an aristocratic family of Alphadanga, then part of Jessore (now part of Faridpur) on November 25, 1906. In the early 1920s, Nurul Momen, as a Dhaka University student, stepped into the world of theatre and became a trailblazer among Bengali Muslims. In the '30s and early '40s, his plays “Rupantor” (Transformation) and “Nemesis” took the theatre circuit by storm. His plays and personal essays in English and Bangla remain unmatched. He was also a renowned broadcaster on BBC, for both local radio and television.
From the '40s, he was a teacher at the Department of Law at Dhaka University. Among his students was Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. In 1971, after Bangladesh’s independence, Momen formed a drama academy of which he was the chairman and Zainul Abedin, the secretary.
Momen wrote the first law book in Bengali for Bangladesh. He received the Bangla Academy award in 1961, the Sitara-e-Imtiaz in 1967 (which he renounced in 1971) and the Ekushey Padak in 1977. The Tenashinas Award, given by theatre and TV artistes, was conferred on him in 1989.
He breathed his last on February 16, 1990. l
