DHAKA, MAR 18: It was not Sheikh Mujibur Rahman but the then Major Ziaur Rahman had declared the Independence of Bangladesh in 1971,President of Krishak Sramik Janata League Bangabir Kader Siddiqui claimed it while addressing a discussion meeting on '40 years of Independence: Trial of War Criminals and Crimes against Humanity’ held at the  Dhaka Reporters' Unity on Friday. The Liberation War of Bangladesh was followed by the proclamation of Independence by Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was not right. Ziaur Rahman declared the Independence of Bangladesh under his leadership, he observed.  
Kader Siddiqui, however, termed Bangabandhu as the father of the nation and also the war of liberation leader. 
He also criticised the government for its misleading activities regarding the trial of war criminals. The tribunal was not of international standard and the prosecutors appointed were not competent and skilled enough to accomplish the job, he added.
“I want trial of the genuine war criminals but it is not accepted to divide the nation in the name of war crime trial.
