DHAKA: BNP chairperson and leader of the opposition Khaleda Zia will lead the 18-party called mass hunger strike programme scheduled for May 20 (Sunday) across the country.

 

The mass hunger strike is scheduled to be started at about 10 am and continued till 5.pm on the day. But venue of the programme is yet to be fixed.

 

BNP standing committee member Nazrul Islam Khan said this at a press briefing after a discussion meeting with Khaleda Zia and her alliance leaders at her Gulshan office Thursday night.

DHAKA: Law enforcers on Wednesday night arrested a Nigerian national from a city hotel at Banani area and seized 450 gram contraband drugs (Cocaine) from his possession.

The arrested Nigerian national is identified as Ikeme Chizoba Betsy, 32.

Police said, a team of Banani police led by sub-inspector Sheikh Aminul Bashar conducted a raid at Hotel Pacific Inn, located at Road-18, Banani around 11:30pm and arrested Betsy from the scene.

After a massive search in the hotel room, the same team recovered 450 gram Cocaine, an addictive drug formerly used to deaden pain.

Two cases were filed in this connection, of which, one was filed against the detained foreigner for staying in Bangladesh without any passport and the other for possessing illegal drugs and fake currencies.

A drug trafficking case was filed with Banani police station under Narcotics Control Act of 1990 in this regard on Thursday.

The duty officer of Banani police station told The Independent, “The arrested Nigerian national was produced before the court by the investigation officer of the case, seeking police remand on Thursday.

Earlier, immigration personnel at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in the capital on July 30, 2010 detained a Nigerian national Afolayan-o-Zaccheaus with six kilograms of white powder which, they thought, was heroin.

An immigration official preferring anonymity said, while the detainee was crossing the gate with another Nigerian, the scanner indicator signaled the presence of some metal inside his luggage.

As the civil aviation officials challenged him, his aide fled the scene but he could not escape.

Immigration officials found 58 small foil packs with white powder inside a total of 10 aluminium packs, his four passports and ID card.

DHAKA: Claiming Thursday’s countrywide daylong hartal a success, BNP’s front ranking leader Nazrul Islam Khan said their current movement will continue to protect national interest and mitigate various public sufferings and also for the return of missing M Ilias Ali alive.

He said the ongoing movement will continue to free people from the hands of the oppressive government, as well as for the withdrawal of “false” cases designed to harass and release of arrested opposition leaders and workers including tge top leaders of BNP-led 18-party alliance.

Addressing a press conference at the BNP central office at Nayapaltan at 5:10 pm today (Thursday), Nazrul Islam Khan said the next course of the opposition movement will be announced tomorrow (Friday).

He said leaders of the 18-party alliance will meet this (Thursday) evening at the Gulshan office of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia’ to take decision about the next programme.

The BNP standing committee member narrated various incidents of arrest and attack by “police, Awami League, Jubo League and Chhatra League” activists on the leaders and workers of BNP and its allies in a number of districts including in the capital during the daylong shutdown today.

He claimed that thousands of leaders and workers were arrested and injured as well as “false and harassing” cases were filed across the country.

Asked about the remarks of ruling Awami League leaders that the opposition will not be able to realise their demands the way it is carrying out movement, Nazrul Islam said it would have been better if they had suggested how the movement should be carried out.

He, however, said BNP does not like, nor it has any wish to carry out agitation with `logi-boitha’ like the Awami League.

The BNP leader said that they along with the people will forge movement to free the country from the “repressive and corrupt government” and to arrange next general election under non-party caretaker government.

Asked about the absence of any leader of other components of 18-party alliance at Wednesday’s and today’s press conference, he said when senior leaders of BNP cannot enter its own office how the leaders of other parties will come in the face of police cordon.

On behalf of BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia, Nazrul congratulated and thanked people and the opposition leaders and workers for observing the hartal spontaneously across the country defying the “cruel repression” of the government.

BNP leaders Abdullah Al Noman, Barkatullah Bulu, M Shahjahan, Mizanur Rahman Minu, Zainul Abdin Farruque, Abdus Salam and Shirin Sultana were, among others, present at the press conference.

DHAKA: Terming the caretaker government tyrannical, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Thursday said people of the country don't want to see any such ruler in the state power in future.

"The caretaker government is a 'government of misrule' backed by army. They have misbehaved with every section of people. So people of the country no more want to see such government," she said.

The Prime Minister said this while addressing a reception accorded to her by Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) on the 31st anniversary of her homecoming day and win in a legal fight with Myanmar on maritime boundary.

Sheikh Hasina urged the opposition party to shun politics of destruction saying democracy will sustain in this country as it exists in other democratic society. "But, no destructive activities in the name of democracy will be tolerated."

Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni and Mount Everest conqueror Musa Ibrahim spoke among others at the reception held on Bangabandhu International Conference Centre premises.

Captain of the national cricket team Mushfiqur Rahim, vice captain Mahmudullah Riyad and striker of national football team Zahid Hasan Emily were also present on the occasion.

BCL president Badiuzzaman Sohag was in the chair while general secretary Siddiqui Nazmul Hossain, addressed, among others.

The Prime Minister said democracy is important to make the country's development sustainable. So, Awami League didn't go for any retaliation of 2001 torture after its win in 2009 general election.

Criticizing BNP for enforcing hartal at the time of HSC examinations, Sheikh Hasina said such disruption affect the life of a student colossally. "For whose interest the hartal has been called?" she asked.

"Education should be the prime and foremost mission of the BCL leaders and workers," Sheikh Hasina said adding educated human resources are the key factor to build a poverty free Bangladesh.

In this regard, the Prime Minister highlighted her government's steps taken for development of a science and knowledge based and modern education system, formulation of a education policy and making education materials available for students.

She said the present government has also attached importance to sports and cultural activities in all educational institutions aimed at creating a healthy and mentally developed nation.

DHAKA: Supreme Court Bar Association (SCBA) President Zainul Abedin on Thursday alleged that the judiciary can not function independently now due to government interference.

Zainul also urged the Chief Justice to take immediate steps so that the judiciary can conduct its judicial proceedings independently.

“The government interference has created an adverse mindset about the judiciary among the people. Hence, the chief justice should take special initiatives to defend the image and dignity of the judiciary,” the SCBA chief said while addressing a press conference at the South Hall of the bar association building.

The SCBA president also demanded immediate release of the 33 opposition leaders, including BNP acting secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, and withdrawal of all cases filed against them.
