Communication between organs to organs is vital and this is done by a chemical messenger comprising feedback loops of hormones released by internal organs of an organism directly into blood regulating distant target organs. Of the hormones, some are local and some general. Most hormones are protein composed of amino acid chains of varying length. Others are steroids, fatty substances derived from cholesterol. Local hormones are acetylcholine from parasympathetic and skeletal nerve endings, secretin by duodenal wall, cholecystokinin from small intestine etc.

General hormones are epinephrine and norepinephrinine from adrenal medulla renin by kidneys etc. A few general hormones affect only specific tissues i.e. target tissues e.g. adrenocorticotrophin from anterior pituitary specially acts on adrenal cortex to secrete adrenocortical hormones. Hormone production often increases and decreases very rapidly. One can measure the changing rate of secretion by collecting samples of both arterial blood entering the gland and venous blood leaving the gland.

Important hormonal diseases are: Adrenal insufficiency (releasing too little cortisol and sometimes aldosterone), Cushing disease (over production of pituitary gland hormone leading to over action of adrenal gland), Gigantism or Acromegaly (over production of growth hormone), Hyperthyroidism (Hashimoto’s thyroiditis, Grave’s disease with toxic goitre), Addison’s disease (primary adrenal insufficiency), Diabetes type-1, and type-2 etc.

The endocrine glands of the body such as Hypothalamus, Pineal gland, Pituitary gland, Thyroid, Parathyroid, Adrenal, Pancreas (Islet’s of Langerhans) through communication keep the activities of the body in balance. The cover story of this issue is on Hormones. The readers will find interesting articles on various hormonal problems.
