Family medicine service provides complete medical care under one roof for all

members of family including children, teenagers, adults, elderly both male and female. Doctors of this specialty can mange chronic

conditions e.g. heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, blood pressure etc. and can also treat acute conditions e.g. sinuses infections.

“The general practitioner is a specialist in his own right, by virtue of his unique and essential contribution in the medical care.” (Report of Royal Commission on Medical Education, Todd, 1968).

The scope of family practice encompasses all ages, sexes, each organ system and diseases

entity. Physicians practicing family medicine are known as family physicians and essential

contribution to the medical care. They are the primary care physicians and provide not only curative but also rehabilitative services – whole patient care at individual/ambulatory care level. They are the pivot of all health care of the country.

Only family physicians can provide accessible, cost-beneficial and equitable healthcare. The family physician provides definitive care to the undifferentiated patient at the point of the contact and takes continuing responsibility for providing the patients care. Family physicians must be specially trained to provide services. There is no alternative of learning.
