Dengue is creating a have in Bangladesh. This year in the capital till now 4549 people admitted in the hospital suffering from this disease. Recently four people died of it including a lady doctor and would be doctor who appeared in the final professional MBBS exam. It has affected people of Dhaka, Kushtia, Dinajpur, Chattagram, Madaripur and Cumilla mainly.

Dengue is a mosquito borned viral disease caused by four types of virus DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, DENV-4 belonging to Flaviviradae family. It is transmitted by female Aedes aegypti and occasionally by Aedes albopticus by bite during day time.

There are two clinical types of the disease: a) Classical dengue and b) Haemorrhagic dengue. Haemorrhagic fever is dangerous, symptoms include high fever upto 40ºC (104ºF), severe abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhea, convulsions, uncontrolled bleeding, bruises etc. There may occur circulatory failure leading to Dengue Shock Syndrome. High fever may last 2-7 days and after few days gap it may reappear. The disease can be misdiagnosed for Chikungunia, Yellow fever, Zika etc to which it is related. Traveler should take meticulous care to prevent mosquito bite. They should use mosquito repellent containing 20-30% DEET or Picaridin on exposed skin.

The disease transmission is higher during rainy season. We must take care of puddles, water tanks, stagnant water in broken jars or flower tubs etc. where this mosquito breeds. Proper sanitation is important for prevention. There is no specific treatment. Symptomatic treatment should be done paracetamol (not NSAID), oral rehydration and when necessary blood (Platelet) transfusion and cortisone. A vaccination is available now- a-days.
