Call to ensure universal health coverage

Health experts called for taking necessary steps for ensuring universal health coverage across the country in the greater interest of the country. A huge number of our people are being deprived of getting necessary health services across the country, they said while addressing the discussion titled ‘Universal Health Coverage: Bangladesh Perspective’ at Zahur Ahmed Hall of National Press Club recently.

Public Health Foundation, Bangladesh (PHFB) organized the programme, marking the World Health Day.  While presenting the keynote paper, Prof. Dr. MS Munsur, vice-chairperson of Public Health Foundation, Bangladesh, stressed on taking combined steps for ensuring universal health coverage. Prevention is better than cure, he said.  He called on the government to take proper steps to raise awareness among people for changing lifestyle for prevention of non-communicable diseases such as diabetes and cardiovascular diseases, which have  become epidemic across the country.  Matters such as development of health and prevention of diseases should be incorporated into our medical education system, which should be community-based and coordinated. Alternative medicine should also be evaluated along with mainstream health system, he said.

It would not be tough to achieve the target of universal health coverage by the year 2032 if steps are taken for increasing the number of physicians, paramedics, technologists and other health workers and using their efficiency, he said. Moderated by Prof. Dr. M Mozaherul Haque, founder of PHF, Prof. Dr. Fatema Ashraf of gynae department head of Shaheed Sohrawardy Medical College Hospital, Prof. Dr. Md. Abu Sayeed, Ex-departmental head of Community Medicine of Ibrahim Medical College, Prof. Dr. Dipok Lal Bonik of Public Health of North-South University, and Dr. Samir Kumar Saha, vice-chairperson of PHF, among others, spoke at the function with Prof. Dr. Sharmin Yasmeen, chairperson of PHF, in the chair.
