Probe into Haizda flood control embankment corruption begins

Concerned authorities and police have started vigorous investigations into allegations of corruption by some Netrakona Water Development Board (WDB) officials and project committee members in connection with repairing of Haizda flood control embankment around the Dingaputa Haor in Mohanganj upazila of the district, official sources said, reports BSS. Standing Boro crops worth about Taka 70 crore were reportedly damaged in the haor areas of the Mohanganj upazila because of flash flood caused by development of breaches on several points of 31 kilometers Haizda flood control embankment recently, the sources said.
According to the sources, director general (DG) of WDB Jahangir Kabir visited the flood-hit haor areas on April 8 last. During his visit, the DG stand released Shahabuddin Ahmed sub-assistant engineer of WDB Netrakona for his negligence of duty. Meanwhile, panel chairman of Netrakona Zila Parishad Abdul Hannan Ratan filed a case with Mohanganj police station against six project committee members of the Haizda flood control embankment repairing project for their corrupt activities involving repairing of the embankment.
Quoting the case, officer-in-charge of Mohanganj police station Mohammad Mejbauddin Ahmed said, the plaintiff complained that the project committee members misappropriated most of the project money without completing the repairing works properly.
As a result, a big portion of the Haizda embankment at Jalalerkur point washed away by the onrush of water from the upstream causing the damage to some other embankments and standing Boro crops on about 20,000 hectors in the haor areas, he said.
Meanwhile, Netrakona Nagorik Andolon and students hailing from the haor areas of the district staged separate human chains in Netrakona district town recently demanding proper investigation into the matter and exemplary punishment of the corrupted persons and WDB officials.
They also drew the attention of the government to declare the flood-affected haor areas in Netrakona district as a “disaster zone” for mitigating the untold sufferings of the local people.
When contacted, executive engineer of WDB Netrakona Abu Taher said that the project committee members were selected on the basis of recommendations of local public representatives.
He said Taka 12.50 lakh was sanctioned for repairing one point of the Haizda embankment in the current financial year and Taka one crore and 20 lakh for repairing the other three points of the embankment in the last financial year.bss
