SC to free jailed children

The Supreme Court Special Committee for Child Rights will take initiatives to release children from juvenile correction centres across the country after holding their bail pleas through video conferencing amid the coronavirus pandemic. The special committee will provide legal assistance to those children who are in juvenile correction centres across the country for various offences, as they are at risk of contracting the coronavirus.

Led by the chairman of the Appellate Division, Justice Imman Ali, the special committee yesterday held a meeting through video conferencing. The other members of the committee—High Court Justice Naima Haider, Justice Sheikh Hasan Arif, Justice Khizir Ahmed Chowdhury, social service department director general and a Unicef official—were also present.

During the meeting, they discussed how to easily provide legal assistance to those children who are lodged in juvenile centres in the country so that they could be released after disposing of their bail pleas.

In a message, Supreme Court special officer Mohammad Saifur Rahman said members of the special committee held a meeting through video conferencing.

The committee discussed how the relevant law could be implemented to provide legal aid to the children so that they could be released from the correction centres after disposing of their bail pleas amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The committee will take necessary steps, he added.

Sources said the special committee would make recommendations on the matter and submit them to the Chief Justice so that the children can be released from the correction centres immediately.
