Reasons for not getting MRPs identified

The home ministry has identified five reasons for not obtaining machine readable passports (MRPs) of at least 11 lakh Bangladeshi expatriates working in different countries. Going abroad by using fake name and false age in the passport, failure of kofil (employers) to return the passport, loss of passport and non-renewal of handwritten passport with validity are among the reasons for not obtaining MRPs, sources in the home ministry said. “Bangladeshis working in different countries have been asked to convert their passports into MRPs from Bangladeshi missions in the respective countries as soon as possible,” additional secretary (security and immigration) of the home ministry, Mostafa Kamal Uddin, told The Independent. “Expatriate Bangladeshis can go back home using handwritten passports. Expatriate Bangladeshis who do not have any travel documents, can also go back home using ‘travel permit’, available at all Bangladeshi missions abroad,” he said. He also said that nobody would be allowed to cross the immigration counter without an MRP from today (Wednesday). “We have already asked the immigration authorities to implement the decision strictly in this regard,” he said. Kamal further said that many Bangladeshis working in Middle East countries are yet to get MRPs as their employers (kofil) have not returned the passports to convert them into digital ones.
He said the passport department had issued at least 1.24 crore MRPs till date. On November 19, foreign minister AH Mahmood Ali informed Parliament that over 11 lakh Bangladeshis working in different countries have not got MRPs yet. According to expatriates’ welfare and overseas employment minister, Nurul Islam, there are 95,70,112 Bangladeshis currently working in different countries.
