The Awami League (AL) has formally begun its campaign to create awareness among people about the coronavirus. Distributing cautionary leaflets in prevention of COVID-19 in front of AL president Sheikh Hasina’s Dhanmondi political office yesterday (Friday), the party general secretary, Obaidul Quader, said party leaders and workers will distribute these leaflets across the country to create awareness about the deadly virus.

Quader also handed over leaflets to the presidents and general secretaries of the AL's Dhaka city south and north units, the Jubo League, Swechchhasebak League, Mahila Awami League, Swadhinata Chikitsak

Parishad, Tanti League, Jubo Mahila League, and the Krishak League.  Talking to journalists at the Dhanmondi office prior to distributing leaflets, Quader said the spread of the coronavirus is a global concern, so people will have to be alert without being frightened.

Quader said the government has made all-out preparations to fight the coronavirus. Screening has been strengthened at air, land and sea ports, but a certain political party (BNP) has been spreading lies against the government.

He also said three persons, including two Italy returnees, were detected with the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) and now they are doing well.

Quader, who is also the road transport and bridges minister, described questions raised by the BNP over the government’s efforts to tackle the situation as “ridiculous”.

“The BNP is out to hatch a conspiracy to grab state power to loot the country’s assets. They wanted to halt the ‘Mujib Year’ celebrations.  And now they are criticising the government over the corona situation,” he said.

He also said Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina herself had started campaigning and taken steps to raise public awareness about the coronavirus. The deadly coronavirus has spread to over 100 countries, but Bangladesh is now relatively safe, he added.

AL presidium members, Begum Matia Chowdhury and Jahangir Kabir Nanak; organising secretaries, Mirza Azam, SM Kamal Hossain, advocate Afjal Hossain; relief and social welfare secretary Sujit Roy Nandi; publicity and publications secretary Abdus Sobhan Golap; labour affairs secretary Habibur Rahman Siraj; office secretary barrister Biplab Barua; deputy office secretary Sayem Khan; Dhaka city south AL president Abu Ahmed Mannafi and general secretary, Humyaun Kabir; Dhaka city north AL president Bazlur Rahman; Jubo League chairman Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash; Swechchhasebak League president Nirmal Ranjan Guha; and Swadhinata Chikitsak Parishad (Swachip) member secretary Dr MA Aziz were present on the occasion.
