Archer Roman clinches BSPA Sportsman of the Year award

Bangladesh No 1 archer Roman Sana won the accolades of Kool-BSPA best  Sportsperson of the Year-2019 for his jaw-dropping performance throughout the last year yesterday. He overwhelmed his rivals Bangladesh ace cricketer Shakib Al Hasan and footballer Jamal Bhuiyan to snatch the best athlete of the year in the award ceremony-2019 arranged by Bangladesh Sports Press Association (BSPA).

Sana also added ‘Popular Choice Award-2019’ to his hut when he got the highest number of votes than other five nominees-Shakib Al Hasan, Jamal Bhuiyan, Mabiya Akhter Simanto (weightlifting), Marjana Akter Priya (Karateka) and Fatema Mujib (Fencing). Sana is the second Bangladesh athlete after ace golfer Siddur Rahman to get ticket for the Olympic Games. He will represent Bangladesh in the upcoming Tokyo Olympic-2020 when he qualified into the semi-final of the World Archery Championship in the Netherlands in June, 2019.

He won silver medal from Asia Cup Archer in Bangkok in March and triumphed three gold medal in XIII South Asian Games (S A Games) in Nepal in December. Actually the lad of Khulna earned an overall 14 medals at home and abroad. “I’m really delighted and at the same time surprised to get an award of the sportsperson of the year. I can’t think of getting such award beating such nominated guys,” said Roman Sana.  

“My next target is to win a medal in Olympic. I want to present a gift to my country. In a bid to win a medal from the big stage, this I am working tirelessly. I have some tournaments ahead. Amending all the mistakes in those tournaments, I can do a good result in Olympic,” Sana told media after getting the credible award of the Sportsperson of the year in the local city hotel yesterday. “I passed a good year of 2018 and 2019. I have achieved the direct access of playing Olympic as the first archer of Bangladesh. I want to march forward my achievement further. I want blessings from my countrymen so that I can bring a lot of medals and success for the country and increase the good image of the country at international arena,” he added.

AIPS-Asia president Sattam Al Sahel and Managing Director of Square Toiletries Limited Anjan Chowdhury as the guest of honour spoke on the occasion. BSPA President Mostafa Mamun, among others, was also present. Shakib Al Hasan (cricket), Jamal Bhuiyan (football), Mabiya Akher Simanto (Weightlifting), Fatema Mujib (karateka), Roman Sana (archery), Eti Khatun (uprising athlete-archery), Dipu Chakma (Taekwondo), Martin Fredric (coach), Kazi Rajib uddin Ahmed Chapol (organizer), Rofiqullah Akhter Milon and Tajul Islam (grassroot sportspersons), Abdul Jalil (special recognisation-Kabadi) and City Group (patroniser) have been awarded with Sportman of the Year.
