Death toll hits 14

The death toll from the Keraniganj plastic factory fire yesterday climbed to 14, as another victim succumbed to burn injuries at Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery. The victim Asad, 14, was on life support with 55 per cent burn injuries. He died around 7:45am yesterday, said resident medical officer Dr Partho Sarkar Pal. The remaining 13 victims were identified as Mahbub Hossain, 26, Salauddin, 32, Bablu, 26, Abdul Khalek, 35, Rayhan Biswas, 16, Imran, 18, Jinarul, 32, Md Alam, 35, Sujon, 19, Jahangir Matubbar, 55, Faisal, 29, Faruk, 32, and Mehedi, 20. Around 17 burn victims are still receiving treatment at both Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) and Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery. Nine of them are at the ICU of the burn institute.  Earlier on Friday, Dr Samanta Lal Sen, chief coordinator of Sheikh Hasina National Institute of Burn And Plastic Surgery said he has never seen such a grave incident in forty years of his career. Due to severe burn in faces, many of the patients are not identifiable, said Sen.   They also have respiratory burns as well while 10 of the patients have 60-80 per cent burns, added Sen. However, the locals alleged that the government agencies deliberately remained inactive against the illegal factory. There are 100 more such factories are in operation in Keraniganj for over years.  Shramik Nirapatta Forum, at a statement, asked the government to ensure workplace safety for the workers. On Wednesday evening, a fire ravaged the plastic factory, killing one worker on the spot, while 31 others were taken to DMCH with severe burn injuries.
