Chattogram’s Riyad set to start BPL campaign today

The first leg of the Bangabandhu-Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) special edition-2019 will end with the two (day-night and night) matches which will be held at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium (SBNCS) in Mirpur today.

Chattogram Challengers will take on Rangpur Rangers in the first match of the day will be played at the SBNCS at 1:30pm.

With this match, all-rounder Mahmudullah Riyad, who missed two initial matches for his hamstring injury as he is struggling to be fit for so long for injury, is scheduled to return and start his BPL campaign.

Riyad appeared at the team’s pre-match day practice session at the National Cricket Academy (NCA) of the SBNCS yesterday. He batted and bowled at net for a longer period under the supervision of the head coach Paul Nixon and assistant-cum-bowling coach Kabir Khan.

Challengers team manager Fahim Muntasir Sumit admitted the matter of playing Mahmudullah Riyad, saying that he is fit and available for the next match against Rangpur Rangers.

“Mahmudullah (Riyad) is fit. He did bowling and batting practice at net. Hopefully he will play in our next match against the Rangers,” Fahim Muntasir Sumit said.

Thought the day-night match is third for the Challengers, it will be second encounter for the Rangers, who played their first match against Cumilla Warriors. They lost it by a mammoth 105 runs in the opening day.

Chattogram BPL Team meanwhile played two matches, where they have produced a mixed fortune. They though won the opener against Sylhet Thunder by five wickets lost the second match to Khulna Tigers by eight wickets.

The Challengers had triumphed their first match that was BPL curtain raiser without West Indies batsman Lendl Simmons and pacer Kesrick Williams, the duo arrived here in Bangladesh in the aftermath of the West Indies tour in India.

But they did not carry on the winning momentum despite fielding those two new players against the strokemaker-filled Khulna Tigers, who comfortably thrashed them to script their first win in their first BPL outing.

This time they have a stronger batting line-up along with bowling attack. They have picked Rilee Rossouw, who was the highest run-getter in the last BPL, from the players’ draft along with Robbie Frylinck, Mushfiqur Rahim, Shamsur Rahman, Nazmul Hossain Shanto.

Their bowling line-up has been boosted by pacers Mohammad Amir, Shafiul Islam, Shahidul Islam and spinner Mehidy Hasan Miraj and rookie leg-spinner Aminul Islam Biplob.

It was not so easier for the Challengers to claw success back at the jaws of the performers-laden team. Captain Mushfiqur Rahim used all the available bowlers in the match against Challengers but he did not give any over to Miraj in the match amid the crowd of the bowlers.

However, Dhaka Platoon will round off Sylhet Thunder in the leg-ending match at the same venue at 6:30pm.
