Sylhet, Ctg to clash in opener

The special edition of the Bangabandhu-Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) T20 2019 will roll onto the ground with the match of Sylhet Thunder and Chattogram Challengers at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium (SBNCS) in Mirpur today.

The day-night match will begin at 1:30pm.

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) broadcasting partners Gazi TV (Gtv) will live telecast the day-night match, which will be run by spider-cam, drone and Ultra-edge technology what were used in the previous BPL edition.

The Thunder held their pre-match day practice with the full contingent on the National Cricket Academy (NCA) ground at morning session, whilst the Challengers turned up to the ground at evening session. Thunder head coach Herschelle Gibbs, who arrived in Dhaka to join his BPL team, led the intense and full team practice session for the first time.

Thunder named all-rounder Mosaddek Hossain Saikat as their captain. He spoke to the media after their practice session, where the captain said the BPL will be challenging for the teams as all are equally balanced with a mix of local and overseas players.

He also said they will get down winning the match despite having challenge in the Twenty20 tournament.

“It’ll be challenging tournament what we know from the beginning. As a captain, I think, the challenge is also waiting for our team. But we’ll get down for winning. It seems to me that winning challenge will be the biggest challenge,” Mosaddek Hossain said.

“The BPL is a big tournament in where those who come all are experienced knows well about their role. It’ll be easier task for me if all the players will perform after taking their own responsibility,” Saikat told reporters.

“We, the local and foreign players do practice together today. I think the team has been good. Inshallah, we will play a good match tomorrow. Here all are good teams, some of whom picked good foreign players and some are picked quality local players. I think all the teams are alike and have balance there,” he added.

On the other hand, the Challengers led by Paul Nixon and his assistant Kabir Khan guided the pre-match day training session. The BPL Chattogram will miss the service of all-rounder Mahmudullah Riyad, who is struggling with his hamstring to be fit completely, for the initial two matches. The team meanwhile named Imrul Kayes as the stand-in captain.

The newly-announced captain said that it’s possible for them to do well if players do their work properly.

“We want to start the beginning well. If we can win the first match, the confidence of all the players will be boosted and the season will then be started well for all. It will be better for the local players and our team as well. All are in good stead. We all will seek to cordially win the match,” Imrul Kayes said.

“It’s difficult for us to make a good combination in the team in the absence of Riyad bhai. We’ll miss him for the first two matches. A player either local or foreign can play in his place. It’s really difficult to recover the place. But who will get a chance to play in that place try to capitalise it,” Kayes told media.

“It’s discussed about strong and weak points of a player in the team meeting. It’s been discussed also in our team. It’s possible to do well if everyone does his work properly,” he added.
