Befitting reply if BNP creates anarchy on Khaleda issue: AL

The Awami League (AL) has warned of a “befitting reply” to the BNP if it tries to create anarchy in the country in the name of waging movement to free the party’s jailed chairperson, Khaleda Zia “The AL is now more organised than the past under the leadership of Sheikh Hasina. So, we are ready to face any sort of situation. If they (BNP leaders and workers) again start doing politics of arson and violence, a befitting reply will be given,” the ruling party general secretary, Obaidul Quader, told the media yesterday.

Quader, who is also the road transport and bridges minister, said this after paying tributes to legendary politician Huseyn Shaheed Suhrawardy at his 57th death anniversary. To mark the occasion, Quader placed a wreath on behalf of the AL at Suhrawardy’s grave on the premises of Doyel Chattar.

The AL leader said Suhrawardy had struggled for establishing democracy, justice, and the rule of law throughout his life. “His extraordinary leadership qualities had shown the nation the right path,” he added.

Hailing Suhrawardy as an unparalleled

leader, Quader said: “The AL is still following his ideals to give institutional shape to democracy.”

Suhrawardy, who is also referred to as the 'champion of democracy', had died at a hotel in Beirut, Lebanon, on December 5, 1963.

Also yesterday, information minister Dr Hasan Mahmud said the chaos created by the BNP in the courtroom is a 'serious contempt' of court.

“The BNP doesn’t abide by the law and they disregard the court. Creating chaos in the court is tantamount to contempt of the court which it (BNP) did in the past too,” Mahmud told reporters after launching a webpage at the AL president’s political office at Dhanmondi.

The webpage was launched ahead of the ruling party’s 21st National Council scheduled for December 20 and 21.

State minister for information Dr Murad Hasan, AL deputy publicity secretary Aminul Islam, member of publication sub-committee Sheikh Tanmoy, AL leaders advocate Balaram Poddar and Aktar Hossain, were among those present during the launch.

Hasan said the court has repeatedly given time in case of the BNP chief. “The law runs as per its own course. The government has nothing to do in this regard. It'll not be possible to release Khaleda Zia, who is convicted, through a movement. Only the court can release her,” he added.

He said the countrymen will resist them (BNP) if they try to create anarchy and conduct assault on the masses in the name of movement and the AL will also stand by the people.
