People want govt to step down: Fakhrul

BNP secretary general, Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir, has said that people want the present government to step down from power as their lives have become unbearable due to the price hike of essential commodities. “Ruling partymen are pushing the country towards destruction. People want the government to quit power at once,” he said while speaking at a discussion at the Supreme Court Bar Association auditorium yesterday (Friday).

The Sechhaasebok Dal, a front organisation of the opposition BNP, organised the meeting to mark the 55th birthday of acting party chairman Tarique Rahman. The BNP leader said the present government is not only autocratic, but also the "father of autocrats and fascists".

Fakhrul also said they are trying to unite people irrespective of their political affiliations to create a mass upsurge to free party chairperson Khaleda Zia from jail and restore democracy.

He alleged that Khaleda Zia is in jail for the sake of democracy. She was not released on bail, though ministers and lawmakers get bail in such cases, he claimed. The BNP leader appreciated the role of Tarique Rahman, who is living in London in self-exile, saying he is working to restore democracy.

Presided over by Shafiul Bari Babu, president of the organisation, the meeting was also addressed, among others, by Advocate Joynal Abedin, Shawkat Mahmud, Habib-un-Nabi Khan Sohel, Mir Sharafat Ali Sapu.
