China sends 200 tonnes of rice for Rohingyas

After five months of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s visit, China has shipped 200 tonnes of rice under the ‘China Emergency Rice Aid Project for Rohingyas’. The rice was already shipped from Shanghai on November 8. It is scheduled to reach the Chattogram port on December 3, according to government sources. It is the first batch of the promised quantities of rice by the Chinese authorities, the sources said.

According to a letter sent by the economic and commercial counselor of the Chinese embassy in Bangladesh to the ministry concerned, the batch of rice is going to be transferred from Chattogram to the Jhilongjha food godown . It has been confirmed on October 30 (Memo No. 51.00.0000.112. 14.016.18(part-2)-402. “The shipment of the rest of the rice quantities will be arranged according to the speed of the Customs clearance and the progress of the first batch,” the letter added.

Sources said that during the Prime Minister’s visit to China in July this year, China proposed to provide 2,500 tonnes of rice for displaced Myanmar citizens known as Rohingyas. After the visit to China, Sheikh Hasina, at a press conference, had said that China would do whatever necessary to accelerate the repatriation of Rohingyas from Bangladesh to Myanmar.
