BNP rallies in cities, dists Saturday

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) will stage demonstration at city and district levels on next Saturday demanding the release of the party’s ailing Chairperson Khaleda Zia, who is serving a 17-year jail term in two graft cases. In Dhaka, a rally will be held in front of the party’s central office at Naya Paltan at 2:00pm, said BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi Ahmed at a press briefing yesterday.

The former premier, who was sent to jail on February 8 last year, is now undergoing treatment at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU). Meanwhile, the BNP yesterday observed 54th birth anniversary of the party’s Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman, who is now living in London in self exile, through various programmes.

The party arranged dua mehfil and organised blood donation camp and clothes distribution among the destitute and did not cut any cake to mark Tarique’s birthday as his mother and the party chairperson remains in prison.Addressing a dua mehfil at the party’s central office, BNP Standing Committee Member Goyeshwar Chandra Roy yesterday said the party leaders are in confusion whether Khaleda would be freed on bail or parole, but her release by way of waging movement is not being taken into consideration.

The party’s student affiliate JCD and youth affiliate Juba Dal jointly organised the dua mehfil wishing good health for Tarique Rahman and his long life. Mirza Abbas, Saiful Alam Nirob, Sultan Salahuddin Tuku, Barkatullah Bulu, Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, Syed Moazzem Hossain Alal, among others, were present in the meeting.
