Russian strikes kill 9 civilians in Syria

Air strikes by Syrian regime ally Russia yesterday killed nine civilians in the jihadist-run enclave of Idlib in the northwest of the country, a war monitor said. Five of the victims died in the village of Al-Malaja in southern Idlib province while the other four were killed in raids on the town of Saraqeb in the east, according to the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. A number of people were wounded, some seriously, the monitor’s head Rami Abdel Rahman told AFP, though he was unable to say how many.


Four more deaths in Bolivia protests

Four more people have died in protests in Bolivia, raising the total number killed in the political unrest to 23, the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights said Saturday. The new deaths were announced after five protesters were killed in clashes with security forces on Friday in central Bolivia, a political stronghold of exiled ex-president Evo Morales.


Trump gets annual physical exam

US President Donald Trump began his annual physical exam on Saturday, visiting the doctor several months ahead of schedule in anticipation of the busy 2020 election season, his spokeswoman said. The 73-year-old last had a routine examination in February, when presidential physician Sean Conley declared Trump to be in “very good health.” Trump, who has confounded health experts with his penchant for junk food and avoidance of strenuous exercise, weighed 243 pounds (110 kg), the report at that time said.


Life taking ‘toll on my health’: Duterte

Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has admitted that life is taking its “toll on my health”, as speculation swirls over the 74-year-old’s prolonged absences from the public eye. Duterte cut short a trip to Japan last month because he was suffering from “unbearable pain” in his spine after a recent motorcycle accident, and has not spoken publicly for two weeks.
