‘Militants use secret apps to reorganise’
RAB arrests six ‘Ansar al-Islam members’

‘Militants use secret apps to reorganise’

Members of the banned militant outfit Ansar al-Islam communicate with themselves through various secret apps. These apps are not in common use, which allows the militants to avoid surveillance by the law enforcers, said Rapid Action Battalion (RAB). Except for the implementation of a big plan, the militant outfit members usually never get together. They also contact themselves without knowing each other, as the app used by the militants does not allow any disclosure of their identity, and carry out organizational activities in a 'cutout' manner, said RAB.

RAB unveiled this information after they detained six operatives of Ansar al-Islam, in Dhaka, Gazipur and Satkhira on Friday night. At the same time, a large number of extremist books, mobiles, laptops and militant training content were seized from them.

RAB-4 detained them while conducting drives in Uttara in Dhaka and Shyamnagar in Satkhira, said Additional Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of RAB-4 Md. Mozammel Haque at a press briefing held in RAB media center in Karwanbazar yesterday.

The detainees are Shafiqul Islam alias Sagar alias Salman Muktadir, 21, Eliyas Hawlader alias Khattab, 32, Ikramul Islam alias Amir Hamza, 21, Amir Hossain alias ‘Tawhid Janatar Artanad’, 26, Shipon Mir alias Abdur Rob, 33 and Oliullah alias Abdur Rahman, 25.  Mozammel Haque also the Commander of RAB-4 said that on Friday night they met together in the capital’s Uttara to implement a plan of a ‘Lone Wolf’ attack.

The RAB official said that all the detainees have been associated with Ansar al-Islam for two to three years. They are against the democratic system and want to establish the so-called Islamic Khilafah at any cost. The militant outfit plans to punish those who appear to be hindering the implementation of this objective.

Ansar al-Islam currently operates in two types of activities. First of all, it is working to increase members through motivational activities. It is believed that such activities are also being conducted at educational institutions, said the RAB Commander.

Secondly, they think it is not possible to establish an Islamic Khilafah by killing everyone. But members of the organization take a hard stand against those who directly oppose Islamic politics and those who are atheists.

Referring to a major destructive ‘Lone Wolf’ attack for which they were united in Uttara, he said that they did not initially acknowledge that they had been involved in any past activities. However, they consider these events to be ‘justified.’

The RAB official added that after analyzing past events, it was observed that the members of Ansar al-Islam did not attack their target persons with firearms. They generally use machetes.

Among the detainees, Salman used to maintain online communication among the nationwide members of the organization. Abdur Rahman served as the head of the Dhaka Division and Amir Hamza of Khulna Division.
