Youth organisation builds bamboo bridge to ease villagers’ trouble

Friends social works (FSW), a social youth organisation at Moddho Goddimari village of Goddimari union of Hatibandha upazila, built a bamboo bridge over the Soti river to ease the suffering of villagers.  Some local youths and students have formed the organisation to serve the community.  The organisation works towards weeding out various social evils like the practice of taking dowry, child marriage, and drug habit, among others.

During the flood in 2015, the bridge on a road of Moddho Goddimari village was fully washed away. Villagers had to cross the broken part through water and mud. Women and children had to face serious problems while walking through this road. In 2017, the broken part was severely damaged by floodwater.

The FSW built the 400-metre-long bamboo bridge over the Shoti River voluntarily.

Motiar Rahaman (65), the muazzin of a local mosque of the village, said they had suffered much for the broken bridge and road.

He appreciated the FSW's role in building the new bridge to ease their troubles.

A member of the FSW,  Humayun Kabir Masum, said they established the club in 2016. They distribute warm clothes and Eid gifts among the poor people of the area, he added.

Masum also said that about Tk. 80,00, collected from donations by well-wishers and from their own funds, were spent to build the bridge. They got help from local upazila Awami League secretary and organising secretary, he added.

FSW president Nurunnabi said they were happy to have served the people of the locality. Harun ur Rashid, upazila engineer of Hatibandha, said visited the spot and prepared a list of broken bridge. After an estimate, the list will be sent to the higher authorities for approval to build new bridges, he added.
