HC dismayed over
slow investigation

The High Court has expressed disappointment over slow progress of investigation into the much-talk-about journalist couple Sagar Sarowar and Meherun Runi murder case. After expressing grave concern over the slow progress of the investigation, the HC bench yesterday said the investigation of the case did not complete although eight years did already elapse since the gruesome killings. The HC bench wanted to know from the investigation officer (IO) of the case Khondker Shafiqul Alam, who appeared before it on the day as per its earlier directive, whether the case will remain in the list of sensational cases.

The bench, comprising Justice M Enayetur Rahim and Justice Md Mostafizur Rahman, came up with the comments while hearing a petition filed by an accused, Tanvir Rahman, who is now on bail. During the day’s proceedings, the IO of the case, who is an additional superintendent of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB), submitted the case docket before the HC bench and said that the investigation of the case was going on.

Relevant samples of the accused and the deceased were sent to the laboratory of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) in USA for DNA test, he added. The HC bench later

wanted to know from him whether the future of investigation into the case was dependant on the DNA test result. The IO replied, “After getting the test result from USA, we would come forward with the investigation.”

The bench said eight years have already passed since the killings took place, but the investigation is yet to complete.

Suspected accused Tanvir, who was arrested and released on bail later on, could not get married as the case against him still remains pending, observed the HC bench.

Amid the circumstances, what we can do for him as no one can marry him when hears that the young man is an accused in the Sagor-Runi murder case, the HC noted.

At this stage, Deputy Attorney General Sarwar Hossain Bappi urged the HC to issue a deadline for completing the investigation into the case.

Then the court fixed November 14 for passing further order on the issue.

Earlier on October 20, the HC, in response to a petition filed by Tanvir, summoned the IO to appear before it with the Sagar-Runi murder case dockets to know the progress of investigation. The HC bench also issued a rule asking the government to explain in two weeks why the proceedings of the case against Tanvir should not be quashed. Tanvir, an official of an English medium school in Dhaka, filed the petition seeking the scrapping of trial proceedings against him in the case. The HC on March 8, 2015 granted bail to Tanvir. Maasranga Television News Editor Sagar Sarowar and his wife ATN Bangla Senior Reporter Meherun Runi were stabbed to death inside the bedroom of their apartment in Dhaka’s West Razabazar area on February 12 in 2012.

Later, eight suspects were arrested in connection with the couple’s murder. Different courts have expressed dissatisfaction over the investigation on several occasions. The murder triggered widespread outrage in the journalist community. But the investigation into the case did not see the light of completion.
