Councillor Rajib sent to jail after remand

A Dhaka court yesterday sent ward councillor Tarekuzzaman Rajib to jail after end of seven-day remand in a case lodged under arms act. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Abu Sayeed passed the order as investigation officer (IO) and detective branch (DB) inspector Fazlul Haque produced the councillor of ward-33 of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) before court and pleaded to keep him behind bars.

Rajib’s counsel however, pleaded for his bail in two cases lodged under narcotics and arms acts. After hearing both the sides, the court sent him to jail. Police yesterday also filed a report against the councillor, saying he established a reign of terror in and around Mohammadpur and Adabor areas through his gang.

Terming him as sultan of crime world in those areas, police said Rajib amassed a huge wealth through land grabbing and extortion, using his armed cadres. Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Begum Yasmin Ara on October 21 placed the crooked councillor on seven-day remand in arms case and seven-day remand in narcotics cases.
