Railway recovers 2 acres of land in Chattogram

Bangladesh Railway (BR) in a special drive yesterday evicted over 210 establishments built near central CRB and Pahartali area in the city and recovered about two acres of land. A team of railway’s Eastern Zone conducted the five-hour eviction drive led by divisional state officer Mahbub Karim.  “We have evicted over 210 makeshift houses and other establishments from CRB and Pahartali area yesterday upon the directives from the BR authority”, Mahbub Karim said. The state officer said adding that the drives to continue for recovering other lands of BR in the port city.

50 gold bars seized at Dhaka airport

Customs officials recovered 50 gold bars, weighing 5.8kg, from a flight at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport on Wednesday. Sazzad Hossain, assistant commissioner of Dhaka Customs House, said a flight of Biman Bangladesh Airlines (BG 022) landed at the airport around 8:40am from Muscat. Tipped-off, a preventive team of Customs House searched the flight and found the gold bars hidden beneath the seat. The seized bars are worth an estimated Tk 3 crore.

400 cleaners receive free cancer screening

Around 400 cleaners of the Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) yesterday received free cancer screening at a community centre at Mirpur Mazar road area under ward number 10. DNCC in collaboration with Anowar Khan Modern Hospital organised a free cancer screening campaign for the cleaners of the city corporation, said a press release. DNCC) Mayor Atiqul Islam inaugurated the campaign as the chief guest and urged all the cleaners to work with sincerity. Urging the cleaners to work with honesty, the Mayor said, “They keep our city clean, if they remain healthy they can put up better service.”

Drug trafficker gets life term

A trial court in Rajshahi on Wednesday convicted a person and sentenced him to suffer life in prison for possessing 200 grams of heroin in Godagari Upazila in the district in 2016. The convict, Kabir Hossain, 31, was also fined Tk 20,000 in default to suffer five months more behind the bar. Special Judge Court-1 Judge Ismat Ara found the accused guilty and pronounced the verdict in his presence. According to the prosecution police arrested Kabir Hossain with 200 grams of heroin from Sadurmore area under Godagari Upazila on March 4, 2016. Upon completion of investigation police pressed charges against him.
