‘Pulsirat’ to be staged at Mahila Samiti today

Today, as part of ongoing 10-day ‘Ganga Jamuna Cultural Festival’, Theatre troupe Prachyanaut will stage its play ‘Pulsirat’ at the Nilima Ibrahim Auditorium of Bangladesh Mahila Samiti in the capital Baily Road area. The play is an adaptation of the famous novel ‘Men in the Sun’ by Palestinian writer Ghassan Khanafani. Translated by Masumul Alam and scripted by Monirul Islam, the play is directed by Kazi Toufiqul Islam Emon.

The play follows three Palestinian refugees named Abu Kayes, Asad and Marwan, seeking to travel from the refugee camps in Iraq, where they cannot find work, to Kuwait where they hope to find work as labourers in the oil boom. The three men each arrange with a clerk at a local store to be smuggled to Kuwait by a driver named Abul Khaijuran. The men are treated gruffly and are humiliated by the process. Once they finally arrange for travel, they are forced to ride in the back of the truck across the desert on their way to Kuwait. At several checkpoints, the men hide in a large, empty, water tank in the stifling mid-day heat as the driver arranges paperwork to get through. Thus, the story of ‘Pulsirat’ goes forward on.

The cast of the play includes Azad Abul Kalam, Shahriar Ferdous Sajeeb, Saiful, Mitul Rahman, Monirul Islam Rubel and others.

In addition, three mores plays will be staged at three different venues of BSA--National Theatre Hall, Studio Theatre Hall and Experimental Theatre Hall this evening as part of the festival. All the plays will be staged at 7pm. l
