Govt, party image
brightened: AL

Hailing the ongoing drive against corruption and illegal activities across the country, Awami League (AL) leaders said the drive has brightened the image of the party and the government. Leaders of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), however, claim that the drive has lifted the government’s mask. Since the drive began on September 18, AL and BNP leaders have been making statements to draw the attention of the public. Leaders from the ruling party said the Sheikh Hasina-led government has started the drive against corruption and illegal activities to pass on the benefits of ongoing development to the masses. No concessions were being made for AL leaders and activists involved in illegal activities, they added.

Speaking to the media, AL general secretary Obaidul Quader said the party is not embarrassed by the allegations raised against leaders and workers from the party and its associate bodies. “We’re happy as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina has become more popular through the ongoing action against corruption and irregularities. The drive has brightened the image of the party and the government,” he explained. He also said the clampdown will be carried out across the country until the “disturbing elements” are rooted out from the country as well as from the ruling party.

Earlier, at a meeting of the AL central working committee (ALCWC) on September 14, Sheikh Hasina took action against corrupt party leaders and workers. At that meeting, Hasina, who is also the organisational chief of the Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL), removed president Rezwanul Haque Chowdhury Shovon and general secretary Golam Rabbani from their posts because of their involvement in corruption and various irregularities.

She also expressed her annoyance with some Jubo League leaders and criticised them for engaging in illegal

activities. On September 18, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested Jubo League’s Dhaka South organising secretary Khaled Mahmud Bhuiyan for running a “casino business” in the Fakirapool area of the capital. Jubo League central committee leader SM Golam Kibria Shamim was arrested on Friday for his involvement in various illegal activities.

Several people, including AL leaders, have been arrested in the last few days from the capital and elsewhere. Huge amounts of cash, gold, liquor, and arms have been seized.

Speaking on the issue, BNP secretary general Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir said recently that the ruling AL has proved they are plundering the country’s wealth. “No one now needs to talk about the AL’s misrule, corruption, and irregularities. Leaders of AL, Jubo League, and Chhatra League are now exposing their involvement in corruption and plundering public money using state power,” he added.

Speaking at a rally in the city yesterday, BNP senior leader Moudud Ahmed alleged that the Sheikh Hasina government is engaged in corruption and plundering public money. This is reflected through the ongoing drive, he said.

The government has failed to curb corruption, he said, adding that all sectors of the government are corrupt simply because Sheikh Hasina has grabbed power illegally.

He also said everybody knows the AL-led government has no moral right to stay in power. “I can’t imagine that the Chhatra League president and general secretary were removed for demanding their ‘fair share’ of Tk. 86 crore, while AL leaders are involved in illegal casino businesses. This is very unfortunate,” he added. He called on the government to step down and arrange a fair election under a neutral government.
