JP discord ends with GM Quader made deputy oppn leader

Jatiya Party, the main opposition in parliament, yesterday picked its Chairman GM Quader as the deputy opposition leader, thus bringing the party leadership together and ending the confusion over the party’s representation in the House. Jatiya Party on Sunday selected party senior co-chairman Raushan Ershad as the opposition leader in parliament, a position she had sought, bringing an end to a series of events and tussle over the leadership in the party, which included some leaders announcing Raushan as the party chief.  Raushan Ershad was also the leader of the opposition in the 10th National Parliament. Parliament Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury yesterday gave the Jatiya Party leaders the recognition as the opposition leader and deputy opposition leader through a gazette notification, which was issued by the Parliament Secretariat.

The power-struggle between Jatiya Party founder late HM Ershad’s wife Raushan Ershad and his brother GM Quader came into light with a letter sent to the Speaker on September 03 which sought JP Chairman GM Quader's appointment as the leader of the opposition, the position earlier held by HM Ershad. A day later, Raushan Ershad also sent a letter to the speaker urging her not to accept Quader’s letter, saying that no decision about the issue had been made in the party forum.

Amid the feud, Raushan convened a meeting of the Jatiya Party Parliamentary Party (JPPP) at her parliament office on Sunday, although party chairman GM Quader held the authority to call the meeting as per the party constitution.

Sources said JP lawmakers including GM Quader had decided not to attend the meeting. However, following discussions and in a bid to bridge the gap among the party leadership, they eventually agreed to join the parliamentary party meeting chaired by the party co-chairman Raushan Ershad, said party insiders.

Talking to this correspondent several JP leaders loyal to GM Quader said they accepted the Raushan group’s decision for sake of the party and to avoid a possible split.

Talking to the reporters at Jatiya Party Chairman’s Banani office, JP Chairman GM Quader said they reached a consensus with Raushan group to avert a major split following the Saturday’s meeting and now they are united with no split within the party.

Replying to a question, Quader, younger brother of JP founder chairman late HM Ershad, said “I’ve formed a crisis management committee comprising senior leaders to overcome the conflict. After the negotiation meeting on Saturday, no-one got defeated. In fact, the victory for all of the groups has been ensured.”

When asked about the recent decisions in Jatiya Party, Presidium Member Zia Uddin Bablu said there is no question of win or loss in the party.

“The party leadership earlier decided to take action against the Raushan loyals as they had announced to form a faction making Raushan Ershad as the chairman. But the issue has been resolved and there is no question of taking any further action over the matter,” he said.

During the media briefing JP Chairman also said their party is trying to reach an understanding with the ruling Awami League to withdraw its candidate in favour of Jatiya Party candidate and HM Ershad’s eldest son Saad Ershad in the by-election to Rangpur-3 parliamentary constituency.

“We had a bit of discussions (with AL) over the issue (withdrawing its candidate). They told us to consider it.  But we still couldn’t reach any understanding. Now we can’t say whether it’ll happen or not,” he said. He said they will wait until September 16, the last date for the withdrawal of candidature, to see the results of their discussions over the matter. The by-election to the Rangpur-3 constituency, which fell vacant following the death of HM Ershad, will be held on October 5. Jatiya Party on Sunday nominated Rahgir Al Mahi alias Saad Ershad to contest the by-polls while Awami League picked its Rangpur district unit General Secretary Rezaul Karim Razu as the party contestant.

GM Quader said their party nominated Saad Ershad for the Rangpur-3 by-election based on discussions and united decision of their party senior leaders.
