‘Damer Madar’, ‘Man of La Mancha’ on Shilpakala stage today

Today, the theatre lovers of Dhaka can enjoy two plays at different venues of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy (BSA) in Segun Bagicha of the capital. Theatre troupe Natyam Repertory will stage its maiden production ‘Damer Madar’ at the Experimental Theatre Hall, while the Department of Drama & Dramatics of Jahangirnagar University will stage a musical theatre production ‘Man of La Mancha’ at the National Theatre Hall at BSA in the evening.

The play ‘Damer Madar’ is based on an ancient Bangla folk narrative. Folk narratives are most enriched tradition of Bengal for thousands of years. Those narratives are mainly flourishing through oral text. The narrative of ‘Madar Pir’ is one of those narratives, which is originated from Muslim myth and has been recited different parts of this land for years among the devotees of ‘Madar Pir’.

Sadhana Ahmed is the playwright while Irin Pervin Lopa is the director and Junaid Eusuf is the artistic director.

The cast of the play includes Tazmi Noor, Shishir Rahaman, Parvin Akhter, Shamima Akter, Fazle Rabbee Sukarno, Jannatul Ferdous and Tarak Nath Das, among others.

On the other hand, the play ‘Man of La Mancha’ is written by Dale Wasserman based on Miguel de Cervantes’ masterpiece novel ‘Don Quixote’. The play has been translated by Abdus Selim and directed by Yusuf Hasan Arko.

The play tells the story of the ‘mad’ knight Don Quixote as a play within a play, performed by Cervantes and his fellow prisoners as he awaits a hearing with the Spanish Inquisition.

The costume of the play has been designed by Khairuzzahan Mitu, while stage lighting has been done by Habib Masud and Apurba Saha Opu has designed the stage.

Tickets will be available in front of the halls before the shows.
