Man beaten dead in Gaibandha

A man who was beaten over having tea in Gobindaganj municipality here on Sunday night died early yesterday.

The deceased was identified as Akalu Sheikh, son of Koser Uddin of Buzruk-Boalia area in the municipality.

Mehedi Hasan, officer-in-charge of Gobindaganj Police Station, said Akalu engaged in a brawl with a tea-stall owner at Hirak crossing of the municipality while taking tea on Sunday night.

At one stage, the shop owner and his accomplices beat him mercilessly around 10pm.

Akalu succumbed to his injuries around 1:30am on Tuesday, the OC said.

Russell viper caught from pond

BSS, Chandpur

Local people from a pond here have caught a Russell Viper, a species of venomous snake in the family Viperidae of venomous Old World vipers.

The snake was caught yesterday from a pond in Kodalia of Chandpur municipality area, upazila officials said.

One Apu Patwari kept the snake in his custody, and later handed it over to assistant commissioner (land) Imran Hossain. Imran Hossain said the snake has been sent to venom research centre of Chittagong Medical College this afternoon. Another snake of same species was caught about one month ago. But it was beaten to death by locals.

One gets life in narcotics case

The District and Session Judge of Kushtia today has given a person life term imprisonment and fined Taka one lakh under Narcotics Control Act 2018.

Judge Arpu Kumar Goswami announced the verdict in presence of the accused- Ziaurl Islam, son of Yakub Mondol of Bheramara Upazila.

The judge also convicted two other accused of the case giving them one and six-month jail and fined Taka two thousand each in default to suffer two months more in the prison. They are- Zahidul Islam, son of late Akbar Hossain and Babul Sheikh, son of Mojibar Sheikh of same upazila.

A team of Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested the accused from Dashmile area of Bheramara Upazila with five kilogram ganga and 600 gram of heroin and filed the case.

2.8MT of fingerlings released at waterbodies in Gaibandha

A total of 2.8 tonnes of fingerlings worth of TK 7 lakh were released at institutional waterbodies including the ponds of Adarsha Guchchagram here this month.

The fingerlings releasing activity started on August 08 at the management of upazila fisheries offices and ended today amid much enthusiasm, office sources said.

Concerned upazila chairman and upazila nirbahi officer inaugurated the fingerlings releasing activity in the waterbodies of the respective upazila as the chief guest and the special guest respectively.

District fisheries officer Abdud Dayan and the concerned upazila fisheries officer, institutional chiefs, local elite including the media men were present on the occasion.

Man held with firearm, bullets

BSS, Dinajpur

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in a drive arrested a man with a foreign made pistol, a magazine and three bullets from Atore Barogram village in Sadar upazila early today.

The detainee was identified as Joinal Abedin, 60.

On a tip-off, a team of the elite force conducted a raid at the village and arrested Joinal with the arm and ammunitions from a house, a RAB official said. He was handed over to Sadar Thana police this afternoon.
