Suspended ACC director Basir arrested

The Anti-Corruption Commission has arrested its suspended director Khondoker Enamul Basir on charges of receiving bribes. An ACC team led by Sheikh Md Fanafilya arrested Basir from Dhaka's Darus Salam area yesterday night, ACC spokesman Pranab Kumar Bhattacharya told reporters. Basir has been taken to the Ramna Police Station, he added.

On Sunday, a Dhaka court passed an order to show suspended Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Mizanur Rahman arrested in a Tk 4 million bribery case filed against him and the suspended ACC director. DIG Mizanur is currently in jail in another graft case.

Earlier on July 16, the ACC filed a case with its Integrated District Office-1 in Dhaka against Basir and suspended DIG Mizanur Rahman over the bribery incident.

The case was lodged after forensic tests confirmed authenticity of the audio clips involving the two respective officials where they spoke on financial transactions.

Earlier, DIG Mizanur in a television interview claimed that ACC official Basir took Tk 40 lakh in bribes from him, promising to give a clean chit in the probe against him over acquiring illegal wealth. Basir also divulged probe details to Mizanur, according to ACC officials. Audio clips of mobile conversations between DIG Mizan and Basir were aired on television.

Basir refuted the allegations and said that the DIG had supplied a forged clip to a television channel, using an imitation of his voice. Basir suspended and a three-man panel led by Fanafilya was formed to probe the bribery allegations.

On June 24, the ACC filed a case against Mizanur Rahman, his wife, brother and nephew accusing them of amassing illegal wealth. The ACC has found evidence of Mizanur’s illegal assets worth over Tk30.7 million.
