2 AL leaders shot dead in Satkhira, Bandarban

Two local-level Awami League leaders were shot dead by unidentified assailants in Satkhira and Bandarban districts yesterday. In Satkhira, Nazrul Islam, 55, vice-president of Agardari union unit of ruling Awami League was shot dead by miscreants at Kashempur Hazampara in the district town. Nazrul is the son of Nesaruddin of Kuchpukur village in sadar upazila of the district.

Quoting witnesses, Satkhira district additional police superintendent Md Iltutmish said a gang of miscreants appeared at the spot riding motorbike and fired at Nazrul while he was returning home from Kadamtala Bazar around 11:30 am. He died on the spot, said the police addl SP. The motive behind the killing of the AL leader could not be known yet and the police are looking into the possible causes, said the official.

However, victim’s son Palash claimed that his father might have been killed following an enmity with former Union Parishad (UP) member Towhidul.

In Bandarban district, President of Tarasa Union unit Awami League, Mong Pru Thoai, was gunned down by some unidentified men at Shamukjhuri in Roangchhari upazila. Police superintendent of Bandarban Zakir Hossain said miscreants opened fire on Mong as he was travelling on a motorbike to the district town yesterday at noon. Mong Pru Thoai died on the spot, he added.

Following the killing a joint force, including members of police and army, launched a drive in the area to arrest the killers, the SP said.
