Evening of sitar and tabla at EMK Center today

Today, Edward M Kennedy Center (EMK Center) in Dhaka is organising an evening of sitar and tabla with Nishit Dey on its premises in the capital’s Dhanmondi area.

The event aims to get the audience re-introduced with the sitar, where it came from, how it made it to its present form. In an interactive music session with the audience, the programme will explore a few ragas along with different rhythm cycles along with the tabla to celebrate this age-old form of music.

Nishit Dey, a promising sitarist, initially stepped into the realm of classical music through tabla. Born in Mymensingh, Nishit Dey is the grandson of noted guru Pandit Mithun Dey.

He first took lessons from his father Sanjib Dey (tabla) and classical music from his paternal uncle Asit Dey, both are celebrated classical music teachers in the country. Started learning sitar, at the tender age of 12, from Guru Sheikh Sattar Mohammed under the Imdadkhani gharana (style) of sitar. In 2009, Nishit started training with Pt. Ashim Chowdhury, one of the finest sitar players of India, based in Kolkata. Nishit dey has been performing regularly on various stages across the country in all leading classical programmes for the last 10 years.
