Wife Minni on 5-day remand

A Barguna court yesterday granted the police five days to interrogate in custody Ayesha Siddiqa Minni, the wife of Rifat Sharif, who was hacked in broad daylight in Barguna town on June 26.

Md Humayun Kabir, investigating officer (IO) of the case and also officer-in-charge (inquiry) of Barguna police station, produced Minni before the court yesterday afternoon with a seven-day remand prayer.

Barguna senior judicial magistrate granted the police five days to grill her after rejecting her bail prayer.

Mozammel Hossain, father of Minni, termed this arrest as a conspiracy against his daughter and family. He  claimed that Minni’s arrest was a plot to turn the focus of the case.  Conspiracies are hatched against his daughter to protect the ‘real killers’, he added. He demanded proper investigation to find out the real culprits and exemplary punishment for them. He also sought direct intervention of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and home minister Asaduzzaman Khan in the matter.

However, Dulal Sharif, father-in-law of Minni, expressed happiness over the news of Minni’s arrest.

He said Minni was arrested on the basis of proper evidence. “Police arrested her after following the interrogation,” he added. Earlier, on Tuesday, Minni was brought to the Barguna Police Lines for recording her statement.

Maruf Hossain, superintendent of police (SP) in Barguna, had said the police brought Minni to his office only to take her deposition as a witness in the murder case.

Later, the law enforcers formally arrested Minni at 9pm after her statement was recorded.  Minni is the No. 1 witness in the murder case started by Dulal Sharif.

On Monday, Barguna senior magistrate’s court set July 31 for the next hearing of the case and sent eight accused to prison.  The police have arrested 14 people, including Minni, in the murder case till date. The prime accused, Nayan Bond, was killed in a gunfight on July 2. Nine people confessed to their crimes, eight of whom had been sent to prison and another was sent to a safe house for being underage. Rifat’s killing took a different turn after Dulal Sharif alleged at a press briefing that her daughter-in-law was involved in his son’s murder. He alleged that Minni had hidden her marriage Sabbir Ahmed alias Nayan Bond, the prime accused in the Rifat murder case, and that she used to visit Nayan’s house frequently.

Besides, instead of trying to protect Rifat on the day, she was ‘busy with herself’ and had even ‘helped the killers’, Dulal said. However, a day after his briefing, Minni told journalists that conspiracies were being hatched against to save the ‘real killers’ of her husband.
