Criminal Investigation Department (CID) has arrested Shamim Kabir, the chairman and owner of Fareast Islami Co-operative Society Limited for allegedly embezzling Tk 300 crore from numerous investors in different parts of the country. At a press briefing in CID headquarters in Malibagh, Molla Nazrul Islam, Special Superintendent CID organised crime told the reporters that the arrestee Shamim Kabir, son of late Akkash Ali was on the run for four years.

About 28 cases including money laundering lodged against him, said the police official. “On July 9, we arrested him from Joitaour Thana of Sylhet district,” he added. The CID official said that on 2006, Fareast Islami Co-operative Society Limited was registered from Cumilla district Cooperative department. After getting the approval, Shamim Kabir started a programme with the local youth and his close relatives, opening an office at Munshirhat Bazar in Chauddagram thana of Cumilla district.

Later, the company amended the registration of its Munshirhat branch and spread from thana to district level. Later, it took permission from Chattogram Division Cooperative Office and spread out its activity in different areas of Cumilla. “Banking on the innocence and naivety, they thrive and conduct their business. They decorated their office with religious elements to impress people by preaching and cherry quoting texts from the holy books. At the end, they suggested people to invest on their airy business,” said Islam.
