Pran, City Group MDs get bail

Safe Food Court — a court that deals with food related cases — yesterday (Monday) granted bail to Ahsan Khan Chowdhury, managing director (MD) of Pran Agro Limited, and Fajlur Rahman, MD of the City Group, in two separate cases filed over low quality food products produced by the two companies.

Dhaka South City Corporation (DSCC) court’s Special Metropolitan Magistrate, Mehedi Pavel Sweet, granted the bail. On Sunday, the court had issued an arrest warrant against Pran’s MD as he was not present in court due to illness. His lawyers, Tanzeem al-Islam and Qazi Abdur Rahman, yesterday told the media that the court expressed its disappointment at the defence’s submission seeking more time for their client’s illness, but the court did not agree and issued the arrest warrant.

“But after surrendering before the court today (Monday), the court accepted the application for bail. On the other hand, chairman and MD of the City Group surrendered and appealed for bail before the court. The court granted bail, taking into consideration his age.

Dhaka South City Corporation’s Safe Food inspector, Kamrul Hasan, and also plaintiff in the case, confirmed the matter to The Independent over the phone and said they surrendered and soughtr bail. “The court granted their bail application after hearing,” he said.

The case was filed on May 22 as the business group did not recall its products, which were part of the 52 unsafe food items ordered to be removed from the market by the High Court.
