Latif Siddiqui lands in jail
in graft case

A Bogura court yesterday sent former textiles and jute minister Abdul Latif Siddiqui to jail after rejecting his bail plea in a corruption case filed by Anti Corruption Commission (ACC). Bogura District and Senior Special Judge Naresh Chandra Sarkar passed the order after Siddiqui appeared before the court and pleaded for bail.

The ACC field the case over Siddiqui’s alleged misuse of power in leasing a piece of state-owned land. Earlier on February 18, ACC Assistant Director Md Aminul Islam submitted a chargesheet against the former minister in the corruption case. According to prosecution, Siddiqui misused his power as the textiles and jute minister and sold 2.38 acres of land at Ranirnagar Bazar in Adamdighi upazila of Bogura to one Jahanara in 2011 without any tenders.

The land was sold for just Tk 23 lakh, which was just over a third of its market value, which is said to have been Tk 64 lakh at that time. Thus, Siddiqui made a criminal breach of trust and incurred a loss of about Tk 40.69 lakh to the public exchequer.
