BSTI cancels licences of 18 including 2 new producers; 11 face suspension; 26 producers’ licences reinstated

Big brands at fault, again

Popular consumer goods producers, including Square, Pran, Danish and Duncans have been found producing substandard products and the Bangladesh Standard and Testing Institution (BSTI), the quality watchdog, yesterday cancelled licences of 18 companies and suspended licences of 11 others.

Earlier, the BSTI tested 313 products in May and found 52 products substandard which prompted the suspension of licences of 43 producers and licence cancellation of the remaining nine.

In a press statement, the BSTI said it has come up with a fresh decision over the 43 products that were found substandard in May. The authorities have finally cancelled the licenses of 16 enterprises out of 43 that had faced suspension. The orders of suspension on 26 other producers were withdrawn as their products were found conforming to quality standards in re-examinations. The license of the remaining one producer (Rupchanda brand mustard oil of Bangladesh Edible Oil Ltd, Rupganj, Narayanganj) will remain suspended as it did not provide any sample to the BSTI, the notice said.

In a separate press statement, the quality watchdog also cancelled the licences of two new producers and suspended 11 others. Eight others were found producing and marketing their producing without any BSTI approval.

The BSTI said it took the decision after performing laboratory tests on 93 products collected from the local markets, which revealed that 22 products were below standard as per the permissible limit of the test.

The producers whose licences have been cancelled are - turmeric powder of Three Star Flour Mill, 3 No Fakirhat Bazar, Gosaildanga, Bandar, Chattogram under the brand name ‘Three Star’ and Ghee product of Agro Organic Product Limited, Dhaka under the brand name ‘Khusboo’.

The enterprises whose licences have been suspended are ghee product of Pran Dairy Ltd. Bagpara, Polash, Narsingdi under the product name ‘Pran Premium’; coriander powder and cumin powder of Square Food and Beverage Ltd, Meril Road, Shalgaria, Pabna under the brand name  ‘Radhuni’; Laccha vermicelli of Hashem Foods Ltd, Bhulta, Rupganj, Narayanganj under the brand name  ‘Kulson’; ghee of Jamuna Chemical Works, Hamja Lane, Hamjabagh, Panchlaish, Sholosohor, Chattogram under the brand name  ‘A-7’; butter oil of Queen Cow Food Products, 218/Achhi Mia Road, Rajakhali, Chattogram under the brand name  ‘Green Mountain’; iodized salt of SA Salt Industries Ltd, Pachhim Gomdondi, Boalkhali, Chattogram under the brand name  ‘Muskan’; iodized salt of Confidence Salt Ltd, Pachhim Gomdondi, Agrabad, Chattogram under the brand name ‘Confidence’; Lachha vermicelli of JK Food Product, Sadar, Jhalakathi under the brand name ‘Madina’; iodized salt of Bismillah Salt Factory, Tin Bazaar, Puran Bazaar, Sadar, Chandpur under the brand name ‘Uut’ (camel) and iodized salt of Janata Salt Mills, 1011/944, Tin Bazar, Puran Bazaar, Sadar Chandpur under the brand name ‘Nazrul’.

Also, eight other companies were found supplying their products in market despite having any BSTI licence to carry out their production. The BSTI has directed these manufactures to withdraw their sold products from the market within 72 hours of issue of the circular. The BSTI has also lodged cases against these companies for producing and marketing products without licences.

Following re-testing of the 42 products found substandard in May, BSTI has cancelled the licences of the following 16 companies: Lachha vermicelli of Mishtimela Food Products, Firingibazar, Chattogram under the brand name ‘Mishtimela’; natural mineral water of Duncan Products Ltd, 20, Kazi Nazrul Islam Avenue, Dhaka under the brand name ‘Duncan’s’;  Mustard Oil of Shabnam Vegetable Oil Industries Ltd, Rupganj, Narayanganj under the brand name ‘Pushti’; iodized salt of Noor Salt Industries, Fariapatti, Sadar, Jhalakathi under the brand name ‘Noor Special’; iodized salt of New Jhalakathi Salt Mills, Arotdarpatti, Sadar, Jhalakathi under the brand name ‘Dada Super’;  iodized salt of Quality Salt Industries, Fariapatti, Sadar, Jhalakathi under the brand name ‘Teen Teer’; iodized salt of  Lucky Salt Industries, 4, Monohoripatti, Sadar, Jhalakathi under the brand name ‘Madina’ and ‘Starship’; iodized salt of Taj Salt Industries, 274/2, Station Mohollah, Sadar, Jhalakathi under the brand name ‘Taj’; iodized salt of Molla Salt Industries (Unit-2), Char Saidpur, Narayanganj under the brand name ‘Molla Salt’; turmeric power of Pran Agro Ltd, Ekdala, Natore under the brand name ‘Pran’; Lachha vermicelli of Pran Agro Ltd, Sapura, Rajshahi under the brand name ‘Pran’; Lachha vermicelli of Jedda Food Products, Katpatti, Sadar, Jhalakathi under the brand name ‘Jeddah’; curry powder and turmeric powder of Danish Foods Ltd, Kanchpur, Naryanganj under the brand name ‘Danish’; chips of Kashem Food Products Ltd, Konapara, Gazipur under the brand name ‘Sun’; and Laccha vermicelli of Amrito Food Products, Amritnagar, Pangsha, Babuganj, Barishal under the brand name ‘Amrito’.

The BSTI has requested the consumers to refrain from purchasing the above products.

The 26 companies whose suspension order have been withdrawn are drinking water of Dighi Drinking Water, Topkhana Road, Dhaka under the brand name ‘Dighi’; drinking water of Arra Food and Beverage Ltd, Uttara, Dhaka under the brand name ‘Arra’; iodized salt of ACI Salt Ltd, Murapara, Rupganj, Narayanganj under the brand name ‘ACI Pure’; coriander power of ACI Food Ltd, Kutirchar, Kamarkhand, Sirajganj under the brand name ‘ACI Pure’; iodized salt of Madhumati Salt Industries, Damodar, Fultala, Khulna under the brand name ‘Madhumati’; noodles of New Zealand Dairy Product BD Ltd, Rupganj, Narayanganj under the brand name ‘Doodles’; curry powder of Pran Agro Ltd, Ekdala, Natore under the brand name ‘Pran’; mustard oil of City Oil Mill (unit-1), Konapara, Demra, Dhaka under the brand name ‘Teer’; mustard oil of Green Blissing Vegetable Oil Industries Ltd, Rupganj, Narayanganj under the brand name ‘GB’; turmeric powder of Tanveer Food Ltd, Meghnaghat, Sonargaon, Narayanganj under the brand name ‘Fresh’; Ghee of Baghabari Special Ghee Co, 380/B, Dakkhin Goran, Dhaka under the brand name ‘Baghabari Special’; Lachha vermicelli of Madhuban Bread and Biscuit Industries (Pvt) Ltd, Panchlaish, Chattogram under the brand name ‘Madhuban’; Lachha vermicelli of Well Foods Limited, Aturar Depot, Sholoshohor, Chattogram under the brand name ‘Well Food’; Lachha vermicelli of Mithai Sweets and Bakery, Jalalabad, Chattogram under the brand name ‘Mithai’; Lachha vermicelli of Madhuful and Products, BSCIC Shilpanagari, Gotatkor, Sylhet under the brand name ‘Madhuful’; biscuit of Imtiaz Bread and Food Product, 399, Achhadganj, Chattogram under the brand name ‘Mehedi’; semolina of Nishita Foods, BSCIC Shilpanagari, Khadimnagar, Sylhet under the brand name ‘Nishita’; turmeric powder of Manjil Foods and Products, BSCIC Shilpanagari, Khadimnagar, Sylhet under the brand name ‘Manjil’; chili power and turmeric powder of Kashem Traders, Dashmari, Binodpur, Matihar, Rajshahi under the brand name ‘Dolphin’; chili powder of Amirul Traders, Dashmari, Binodpur, Matihar, Rajshahi under the brand name ‘Surja’; flour of KR Food Industries Ltd, Sitakunda, Chattogram under the brand name ‘King’; honey of Green Lands Mill Product, 95, Sharif Hossain Sarak, Pabla, Daulatpur, Khulna under the brand name ‘Green Lands’; fermented milk of Rupsha Food Products, Dhaka Trunk Road, Eidgah, Chattogram under the brand name ‘Rupsha’; turmeric powder of Shan Food, Jail intersection, Kushtia under the brand name ‘Shan’; and Chanachur of Tayeba Food Products, Budhal, Chandiyara, Sadar, B-Baria under the brand name ‘Mokka’.

BSTI has directed the companies whose licences were reinstated to keep the quality of the products keeping in line with the permissible standard.

It has also directed the manufacturers, suppliers, wholesalers and retailers having their licences suspended to refrain from selling and distributing the products and advertisement without re-approval by enhancing the quality of the products.

Besides, the companies that have got their licences cancelled for supplying substandard products have been directed to refrain from selling, distributing and advertising their products.
