7 held for online shopping fraud platforms in city

An organised group has been swindling money from naive customers through fake Facebook pages promoting the businesses of several consumer goods. After being informed, the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) arrested seven people in Dhaka for allegedly defrauding people through online schemes on social media. They are: Mohammad Sujan Mollah (26), Hafizul Hasan (32), Jardis Hossain (20), Mehedi Hasan (23), Nur Islam (19), Parvez Mollah (19) and Abu Taher (19).

"These people have been arrested following a complaint lodged by a renowned apparel brand in the country, Sailor," said RAB-4 commanding officer Chowdhury Monjurul Kabir. They would display branded and good-quality products on social media platforms to sell them for a high price and would later send poor-quality products to their customers. The seven would also send fake or wrong products to the customers, added the RAB official. He was speaking at a press briefing at the media centre yesterday. Saiduzzaman, marketing manager of Sailor, said the group had been using the company’s logo on its website. “After observing that, we urged the RAB for further action,” he added.

The group used to post attractive advertisements of clothing, jewellery and mobile phones and promised to deliver the products to buyers for a nominal courier service fee.

But the customers did not get the goods they ordered in most of the cases. Sometimes, they received parcels containing cheap, outdated stuff like potatoes and onions.

The gang of fraudsters used to operate at least 17 websites to sell counterfeit products of branded items. The RAB has revealed the name of the following websites regarding the fraudulent activities: Unique Fashion, Rose Fashion BD, Lifestyle.com, GreenXpress.Com, Gentle Fashion, Gentle Point, Fashion Point, Plus Point, Mobile Shop24, Goyna Mohol, Arifull Islam Ariean, Niloy Mahmud Sujan, MD Tanvir Abutaher, Advance Electronics, Dream Fashion, Xian Rihan. In a drive lasting from late Wednesday to early yesterday, RAB members recovered a computer, mobile phone, router, and low-quality and fake items from the possession of the arrested persons. They were arrested from the Darussalam area in the capital.

"The arrestees used to copy the products of renowned brands and upload them on fake websites. They used to offer cheaper prices for branded items," he said.
