48 gold bars seized at Dhaka airport

A team of Customs Intelligence and Investigation Directorate (CIID) recovered 48 gold bars worth Tk 7.96 lakh from a garbage basket at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport yesterday.

Tipped off, a team of CIID recovered the gold bars weighing 15.738kg from nine packets wrapped with scotch tape near a washroom around 1:30am, said Director General CIID Dr. Shahidul Islam.

BSS adds: Meanwhile, a Dhaka court yesterday put one Mizanur Rahman on a three-day remand in a case filed over gold smuggling.

Dhaka metropolitan magistrate Masudur Rahman passed the order as police produced the accused before the court and pleaded for 10 days of remand.

Customs intelligence detained Mizanur on Friday at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport with eight gold bars and ornaments weighing total 1.32 kg.

Mizanur landed here by a Bangladesh Biman flight BG-222 from Muscat, Oman, and tried to cross green channel of the airport. Customs men recovered the gold bars and ornaments hidden inside his luggage.

The estimated cost of the gold was Taka 50 lakh.
