3,000 female workers to get jobs in Jordan RMG sector soon

More than 3,000 female workers of the country are likely to get work in the garments sector of Jordan soon. Classic Fashion Apparel Industry, the largest garment manufacturer of Jordan, is going to hire workers from Bangladesh along with some other countries around the world, according to sources. With this, the number of Bangladeshi female garments workers in Jordan would exceed 60,000.

In 2018, around 11,000 female workers from Bangladesh went to Jordan to work in the garments industry there, according to Bangladesh Overseas Employment and Services Limited (BOESL), the only 'state-owned manpower exporting company of Bangladesh.

According to BOESL, it has set a target of sending 11,500 female workers to Jordan this year.

At present, around 150,000 Bangladeshi workers, both male and female, have been working in Jordan in various capacities.

When asked, BOESL general manager (GM) Salim Mollah yesterday told this correspondent that Jordan preferred female workers for its growing garments sector. “To meet the growing demand, it receives female workers from 13 countries around the world,” he said.

He also said the female workers would be sent under the government-to-government (G2G) mechanism through BOESL. They would not have to pay anything out of their own pocket.

“The service charges of BOESL—Tk. 17,750 for each female

worker—will be paid by the foreign employers,” he added.

Mollah further said that apart from Classic Fashion, a total of 40 apparel factories in Jordan had been receiving Bangladeshi workers through BOESL on a regular basis. They place their demands at the Bangladesh Embassy in Amman. “After receiving the demands, BOESL gives recruitment circulars on newspapers or websites,” he explained.

“By scrutinising the applications, we prepare a list of jobseekers. Representatives of the employers select workers after some necessary tests. BOESL just plays the role of a middleman between the workers and the employers. At the same time, it ensures their safety and facilities,” Mollah said.

According to BOESL officials, Jordan signed a bilateral agreement with Bangladesh government in October 2016 to hire Bangladeshi workers under the G2G mechanism. In that agreement, Dhaka and Amman agreed on arranging proper training and medical checkups for Bangladeshi workers before their overseas recruitment. Under the provisions of the deal, Jordan ensures necessary steps for ensuring security, safety, transport, accommodation, food and regular wages for Bangladeshi workers.
