SBMCH doctor, nurse suspended

Head of the gynaecology and obstetrics department of Barishal Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital (SBMCH), Dr Khurshid Jahan, and senior staff nurse of the same department, Josna Aktar, were suspended yesterday for showing disrespect to human bodies. SBMCH director Dr Bakir Hosen said: “Following a health ministry order, we've suspended the duo. A three-member inquiry committee, headed by Prof. Dr Zahirul Haque Manik, has been formed to investigate the matter. The committee will submit its report within three working days.” The two other members of the committee are Dr Fayzul Bashar and Dr Imtiaz Uddin of SBMCH.

According to Barishal medical sources, a total of 31 human fetuses and body parts were found near a dustbin of the hospital.  The news created panic among the city dwellers. Earlier, SBMCH principal Dr Syed Maksudul Haque had ordered for a general cleaning of the gynaecology department. The departmental head, in turn, ordered a staff nurse to clean the room. At one stage, those foetuses were found near the dustbin.

Asked, Dr Khurshid Jahan said that the foetuses were at least 30 years old and used for demonstration purposes during practical classes of medical students. "However, those were discarded in the last few years and kept in storage. I ordered the nurse concerned to dispose them of yesterday. But she did not do the work properly and dumped the foetuses into a dusbin,” he added. Following media reports, the health ministry ordered that action be taken against persons responsible for the fiasco.
