Bangladesh Rly set to introduce modern trains

Bangladesh Railway (BR) is set to introduce environmentally friendly, modern trains with bio-toilet facilities on its new broad gauge lines for the first time within March. The red-and-green coaches made in Indonesia will be able to hit a top speed of 2.5 kilometres per minute, and have already started arriving.

As part of its move to modernize rail travel in the country, BR decided to bring 50 coaches for the newly-installed broad gauge rail tracks from Indonesia. In the first phase, 15 red-green coaches have already reached the Saidpur Railway Workshop after unloading at Chittagong Port.

Since then various exercises have been carried out by staff at the workshop to learn more about the trains before they are put into service. Eleven technicians from Indonesia are currently in the country to help the locals in the process of familiarizing themselves with the vehicle.

In the meantime, Bangladesh Railway Managing Director Khandakar Shaidul Islam visited Saidpur Rail Workshop.

According to BR sources, the 50 coaches are being purchased at a total cost of Tk 213 crore. In this bio-toilet train, human waste is collected and discarded in a systematic way. The trains expected to ply inter-city routes will provide environmentally friendly clean and improved toilet for passengers.

Saidpur Railway Factory Divisional Supervisor (acting) Md Joydul Islam said government will bring coaches for both broad gauge and meter gauge lines. A total of 200 coaches costing Tk 580 crore will bring for miter gaze, the supervisor added.
