Seven poets from abroad honoured with ‘Kathak Literary Award’

Seven poets from abroad were honoured in Dhaka International Poets Summit-2019 held at the National Gallery of Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy in Segun Bagicha of the capital on Thursday. At the event, Ali Al-Shalah from Iraq, Annabel Villar and Julio Pavanetti from Uruguay, Claire Booker from Great Britain, Kama Sywor Kamanda from Congo, Malim Ghozali PK from Malaysia, and Tianxin Cai from China were awarded with ‘Kathak Literary Award 2019’ for their extraordinary contributions to world literature.

Eminent poets from Bangladesh-- Asad Chowdhury, Hayat Saif, Mohammad Nurul Huda, Habibullah Siraji, Jahidul Huq and Aminur Rahman-- also attended the summit.

Information Minister Hasan Mahmud was present as the chief guest at the event. He thanked the organizers for taking such a massive initiative in the country and expressed his gratitude to the foreign poets for their interest in Bangladesh.

Hosted by Kathak, Bangladesh-Poetry Initiative arranged the event for the fifth time focusing on getting poets and poetry lovers together to define the path for the multilingual development and propagation of the poetic arts in Bangladesh and other countries of the world.

Three new books were launched at the summit. Of those, ‘Dhaka Anthology of World Poetry 2019’, is an initiative from Bangladesh, where 66 important contemporary poets’ works from 34 countries of five continents have been composed together to give a wide spectrum of creativity to the readers and listeners. This book has been edited by Aminur Rahman and Bilkis Mansoor.

Another book, titled ‘Bishho Shera Samakaleen Kobider Kobita’, contains the poems of seven visiting poets from abroad. The poems of this book were translated and edited by Aminur Rahman.

After the award ceremony, a poetry recitation session was held at the venue. Poets Asad Chowdhury, Hayat Saif, Mohammad Nurul Huda, Habibullah Siraji, Jahidul Huq and Aminur Rahman enchanted audience with their recitations, while the international poets rendered recitations in their native language that mesmerised the audience in spite of the difference in language.

Beginning on Janaury 30, the four-day summit is scheduled to conclude today. l
