Nat’l Athletics starts tomorrow

National level athletes will make their bid to establish their supremacy in the national athletics when the 42nd Walton National Athletics Championship will start from tomorrow at the Bangabandhu National Stadium (BNS).

A total of 500 athletes from across the country will compete in 36 events - 22 for men and 14 for women’s in the three-day meet.

State Minister for Youth and Sports Zahid Ahsan Russel will inaugurate the competition while Bangladesh Awami league’s Youth and Sports Secretary Harunur Rashid and Senior Operative Director of Walton F M Iqbal Bin Awnar will attend the ceremony as special guests.

General Secretary of Bangladesh Athletics Federation, Abdur Rakib Montu is optimistic about the championship’s success.

“The championship aims to encourage youths towards athletic, we want to produce more athletes through the championship,” said Abdur Rakib Montu.

 “I am really optimistic that athletes will reach new heights and they will surely break some records this year,” he added.

Athletes from 64 districts, eight divisional sports associations, universities and different other services teams will take part in the championship.

The competition was scheduled to be held

in December last year

but later pushed back due to the national general election.
