DNCC mayoral by-election
February 28

The Election Commission (EC) yesterday announced the schedule for the by-election for the mayoral post of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC). The poll will be held on February 28. Besides, elections to the 36 new wards --- 18 under the DNCC and 18 under Dhaka South City Corporation --- will be held on the same day. EC secretary Helal Uddin Ahmed announced the schedule at the media centre of Nirbachan Bhaban in the capital. As per the schedule, the last date for submission of nomination papers is January 30 and scrutiny will take place on February 2. The last date for withdrawal of candidacy is February 9.

The commission announced the schedule as the High Court on January 16 cleared the hurdle for holding the by-election for the mayoral post and polls for the 36 new wards. The mayoral post became vacant due to the death of Mayor Annisul Huq on December 1, 2017. The EC also announced the schedule for the by-election for the Kishoreganj-1 constituency, setting February 28 as the date. The last date for submission of nomination papers is January 31, scrutiny will take place on February 3, and the last date for withdrawal of candidacy is February 10. The EC said the Kishoreganj-1 constituency has been vacant since January 3, as Syed Ashraful Islam, the winning candidate from the seat, died before taking oath.

In addition, the EC has decided to hold the Upazila Parishad elections in five phases. The first phase will be held on March 8 or 9, second phase on March 18, third phase on March 24, fourth phase on March 31 and the fifth phase after Ramadan. The commission will take the final decision at the EC meeting on February 3. The commission, at its 43rd meeting yesterday, also decided to hold elections to the Patuakhali Municipality, Amtali Municipality and 11  Union Parishads on February 28.
