2 warehouses gutted at Jashore jute mills

A fire broke out at two warehouses of a jute mill in Chengunia area of Abhaynagar upazila on Thursday afternoon.

The fire ensued from an electric short circuit around 2:30pm at a jute warehouse of Roman Jute Mill in the area, said Wadud Hossain, assistant director of Jashore Fire Services and Civil Defense. The fire soon spread to a nearby yarn warehouse.

Around 3-4 maunds of raw jute and 40 tonnes of yarn were gutted in the fire, claimed Mohammad Ali Kasari, the owner of the mill.

On information, two firefighting units from Abhaynagar and Jashore rushed to the spot and managed to bring the flame under control after 45 minutes' frantic effort, said Wadud.

The loss incurred due to the fire could not be known immediately.

25-kg venison seized

The Forest Department seized 25-kg of venison from Terkathikhal area in the Sundarbans under Burigoalini Forest Station in Shyamnagar upazila on Thursday night.

On information, forest guards conducted a drive in the around 8pm and seized the venison, said Burigoalini Forest Station official KM Kabir Uddin.

However, the poachers could not be arrested from the spot, he added.

Female police barrack

inaugurated in Gaibandha

A newly constructed barrack for female police members was inaugurated at district police lines of the town on Thursday.

Public Works Department (PWD) implemented the construction work of the barrack, office sources said.

Deputy Inspector General of police, Rangpur range, Debdash Bhattacharya formally inaugurated the barrack on Thursday as the chief guest.

Speaking at the function DIG Debdash Bhattacharya said the government had been constructing infrastructures including barracks for the police members across the country since 2009 aimed at solving their accommodation problem. Superintendent of Police Engineer Abdul Mannan Miah and Executive Engineer of PWD Arifuzzaman Khandakar were present on the occasion.

2 killed in Bogura road crash

Two motorcyclists were killed as their vehicle hit a tree beside Talora-Jamdar road at Kalipara village in Kahalu upazila on Thursday.

The deceased were identified as Suja Uddin Khan, 36, son of late Samsul Khan of Luknathpara village in Durgapur Union Parishad and also the former chairman of the union, and Lebu Khan, 55, of the same village.

Officer-in-charge of Kahalu Police Station Sawkat Kabir said the accident took place when a speeding motorcycle carrying three people crashed into a banyan tree beside the road around 7pm, leaving the duo dead on the spot.

21 arrested in Dinajpur

Law enforcers, in special drives arrested 21 persons including five drug traders from different areas of the district in last 12-hour ending at 8am yesterday morning.

Law enforcers also seized 125 bottles of phensidyl and 1,500 pieces of cow fattening tablets during the drives.

Police said they were picked up from different areas of the district on different charges.

Several cases, including charges of subversive activities, are pending with different police stations against the arrested persons, the sources added. Meanwhile, members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in a drive detained three drug traders along with 50 bottles of phensidyl and 1,500 pieces of cow fattening tablets around 6am from Hili Railway Station in Hakimpur upazila of the district.
