2 killed in Tangail road crash

Two people were killed and four others injured when a bus rammed a pick-up van at Pakutia in Ghatail upazila yesterday.

The deceased were identified a Rezaul Karim Shyamol, 32 of Ghatail upazila and Kabir Hossain, 30 of Phulbaria upazila in Mymensingh district.

The accident took place on Tangail-Mymensingh road when the Mymensingh-bound bus from Pabna hit the pick-up van coming from the opposite direction around 11:30 am, leaving a pick-up van passenger dead on the spot and five others injured, said Maksudul Alam, officer-in-charge of Ghatail Police Station.

The injured were taken to Ghatail Upazila Health complex where doctors declared another dead.

49 arrested in Dinajpur

Law enforcers, in special drives arrested 49 persons including 14 drug traders and two activists of Jamaat-E-Islami from different areas of the district in last 12-hour ending at 8am yesterday morning.

Law enforcers also seized 255 bottles of Phensidyl and 82 pieces of Yaba tablets during the drives. Police said they were picked up from different areas of the district on different charges.

During the drives, Dinajpur Sadar police arrested 11 persons including three drug traders along with 52 bottles of Phensidyl and 82 pieces of Yaba tablets, Birampur Thana police arrested two drug traders, Birganj Thana police arrested seven persons including three drug traders and two activists of Jamaat-E-Islami, Phulbari Thana police arrested two persons, Kaharole Thana police arrested four persons, Ghoraghat Thana police arrested 3 persons including a drug trader along with 50 bottles of Phensidyl, Khansama Thana police arrested three persons, Biral Thana police arrested five persons, Parbatipur Thana police arrested three persons, Nawabganj Thana police arrested three persons and Chirirbandar Thana police arrested one person.

Several cases, including charges of subversive activities, are pending with different police stations against the arrested persons, the sources added.

Meanwhile, members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) in a drive detained five drug traders along with 153 bottles of Phensidyl around 6am from Hili Railway Station in Hakimpur upazila of the district.

Later, the detained persons were handed over to the Hakimpur Thana police, BGB said.

The arrested persons were sent to jail.
