The Awami League-led Grand Alliance yesterday put forward the list of its final candidates for 300 constituencies who will be contesting the upcoming general election slated for December 30.

The list includes names of 303 candidates for 300 parliamentary constituencies, sources in the alliance told The Independent after the expiry of the deadline to withdraw candidature expired at 5pm yesterday.

Among the 303 names, 258 are Awami League candidates who will be contesting the election with party symbol ‘boat’.

Twenty-nine candidates of the Ershad-led Jatiya Party and 16 from other parties in the grand alliance will also contest the polls with ‘boat’ symbol, the sources said.

Jatiya Party, however, has announced that it will field party candidates in 143 more seats and they will run with party symbol ‘plough’.

The 11th general election will be held on December 30. It was deferred once by the Election Commission upon demands from the opposition political parties.

As per the polls schedule, the deadline for filing the nomination papers was November 28. Since then, the commission has been engaged in hearing appeals of rejected candidates.

After December 9, the last date for nomination withdrawal, the commission will allot polls symbols to contestant and open the field for campaigning.
